NOT a McDojo...

Move well... so that you may Survive... and then Thrive. We don't "work out". We train. With a purpose. We move. We practice. We explore. We evolve. We're not here to hand out black belts, or belts of any color for that matter. Sure, we have a ranking system so that goals can be set and achieved, and students can be rewarded for their efforts. But attaining a rank or a color of belt is secondary to the development of the character of the student. I've been in the martial arts world for a very long time, and nothing irritates me more than the erosion the core values of a martial artist, and the frequently observed arrogance... Integrity. Confidence. Discipline. Self-Reliance. Diligence. Compassion. MOVE - learning to move correctly in your foundational years is critical to developing enduring health and fitness. Incorrect or improper patterns grooved into a younger mind and body can take a lifetime to undo. Regular bullying, abduction, awareness classes and workshops

Philosophy on Movmement
"Motion is life." -- Hippocrates "Movement is life." -- Jules Verne "First move well. Then move often." -- Gray Cook "Nothing is more revealing than movement." -- Marth Graham
Quality First
Know the difference between Training, Testing and Operating/Performing/Competing. We'll work with you to understand, plan for, and execute on these distinct phases of your programming. You will learn correct technique and form so that you can maximize your training and minimize recovery and injuries. We'll develop short and long term plans based on your desired goals. We'll show you the "brakes" to be aware of for different types of training and exercise - so you can self-govern and truly "listern to your body" intelligently - with real markers and indicators.

Strength, Power & Endurance

Strength, Power and Endurance are the hallmark attributes of a warrior, athlete, or any hard-living individual. Develop these attributes in the ratios desired for your personal objectives and goals. Strength - the generation of force against progressive resistance. Power - the dynamic and ballistic projection of force. Endurance - the ability to sustain workloads for extended periods of time. "Strength is a Skill." -- Pavel We understand the energy systems of your body, and how they influence your training plans for in the development of these three related attributes. Tune them for the desired outcomes of your training. This approach is how you learn to train smartly, to achieve maximum results in shorter timelines, while staying fresh and building health.

Mobility

While there is healthy debate, and in some cases dogmatic viewpoints, on usage of the term "mobility" in the strength and fitness industry, the ability to move through a functional range of motion with control, strength and power is what we consider mobility at IMMA. We believe that mobility, strength and power should be holistically trained and not siloed, and that they are interdependent and complementary to each other. A large variety of available tools, techniquies, exercises and drills are employed to simultaneously develop mobility/flexibility and strength. Michael is certified as a Flexible Steel instructor
Attributes & Skills
Many strength, conditioning and movement systems grew from ancient warrior classes and cultures. Acknowledging this legacy and the fact that movement, martial arts and combatives are inextricably linked - there is a set of attributes and skills that are key to your development within the IMMA philosophy and system. Neural stimulation and re-grooving, proprioceptive awareness, deep adaptive balance, and attaining the ability to "access the flow" at need - these are core attributes and skills that foster growth across all domains of practices, and enables growth as a more complete human being.
Tension < > Relaxation
Learn to modulate your movements via regulation of tension and relaxation. This is a monumental skill to achieve. This balance between tension and relaxation is perpetual, even if we are unaware it exists. Most systems/schools and individuals that ascribe to these systems' philosophies focus on either tension or relaxation. And in those cases where both tension and relaxation are acknowledged, a clear bias towards one or the other is apparent. At IMMA you will deeply explore tension and relaxation. You will achieve the ability to apply either or both at will, at the correct balance and dosage, in any scenario or type of movement. Even better, you will do this at need, without deliberate or conscious thought. You will intrinsically understand phrases such as: "Strength is a skill" "Tension equals strength" "Selective tension" "Less tension. More power." At a deep level - i.e. muscle fibers and cells - the ability to generate greater power and speed, and less so, strength, is directly related to the muscle's ability to relax faster and more fully. You can enhance this relaxation with focused training - which is exactly what we do - thereby gaining power and speed.
Precision
As you collect and elevate these attributes and skills, you begin to move with precision. Less effort is expended. Refinement of motion is perpetual. Deceptive power is unleashed. You discover your capabilities are organically transferrable to any/all movement patterns. Your skills are deeply rooted as evidence of the replacement of your operating system becomes apparent.
Flow
Flow state identifies an altered state of consciousness, often depicted in Asian martial arts traditions that ascribe to Taoist or Zen principles as "no mind" (mushin in Japanese). It indicates operating at a heightened level of awareness and performance where movement is effortless and happens of its own accord. Precision and Flow often manifest together, and this is certainly the intent of our training system at IMMA. Any martial artist - or anyone from any walk of life - who has entered the Flow State will forever after long to return and reside there.

BreathWork :: the Forgotten Element

As you have likely surmised by now - breathing, or "breathwork" - is a foundational element of training at IMMA. It is part of every domain of practice and program. It goes far beyond what many contemporary breathing techniques offer. To understand the depth, breadth and the phenomenal effects of breathwork you can achieve, be sure to get this book, and to explore the breathwork classes we offer. Systema Pillars: Breathing - Relaxation - Freedom of Movement - Structure Notable Quotes on the Power of Breathing: “Breathing has the most profound implications on your performance and well-being – far greater than even most professional coaches realize. And getting oxygen to your cells is only a small part of it. Remarkably, martial artists developed state-of-the-art breathing techniques centuries before scientists were able to understand and validate them.” -- Pavel Tsatsouline "Control the breath, control the body." -- Mark Reifkind “Breathing is the bridge that connects your psyche and your physiology.” -- Vladimir Vasiliev
