Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Integral Movement & Martial Arts a Martial Arts school or a Gym?
Answer: Yes to both. IMMA is a martial arts school. And it is a gym.
Aligned with its philosophy, system and curriculum – IMMA is both a martial arts school and a gym. As a gym, IMMA is a specialized facility, focused on building strength and power, and developing functional attributes that complement your strength and power. Endurance, mobility, deep motor control - plus other unique skills to enhance your life and prowess as a martial artist. As a martial arts school, IMMA offers multiple programs of study.
Q: I only want to train in martial arts/self-defense/combatives - can I do that?
Answer: Yes.
Several membership options are available to you if you wish to train exclusively in martial arts. And if you ever decide to train in other programs at IMMA, it is easy to modify memberships.
Q: I want to train with Kettlebells. Do you have a program or classes for that?
Answer: Yes. BUT... please read below
IMMA offers multiple group class options for kettlebell training. And I teach the "hardstyle" techniques for kettlebells. Along with these techniques is a philosophy of training and life, and programming based on optimizing performance and longevity. You are encouraged to explore all programs and classes available to you in the “MOVE” domain. These complementary classes – such as Integral Strength and Clubs – allow you to develop more attributes and become a more well-rounded athlete/performer/fighter/human being. Also note that the “MOVE” membership option includes all of these types of classes and more.
Q: There are so many "breath work" classes out there today - why is the BreathWork at IMMA unique?
Answer: Yes, there are many "flavors" of breathwork available today. The BreathWork at IMMA is by far the most comprehensive and life-changing form you will find.
Based on the book The Breath Is the Work, our breathwork classes are rooted in both ancient traditions and modern science. One of the many things that separates our breathwork from others is the emphasis on "work". Our training combines breathing techniques with physical activity to trigger adaptations within your CNS, at the cellular level, and your consciousness. This breathwork is about movement and effort, allowing the breath to drive, enhance or modulate the movement to achieve real and permanent change and improve your performance, health and longevity.
Q: Are your memberships month to month?
Answer: Yes. Memberships at IMMA are monthly, and you can cancel at any time. Annual memberships, which have major discounts, are also available.
Full details on memberships offered at IMMA are available here. All membership types are monthly by defaults. However, there are also annual memberships that offer the greatest discounts and benefits. Annual memberships - once purchased - are not refundable.
Q: What are those Indian Club, Jori and Persian Meel things?
Answer: Indian Clubs/Jori/Gada and Persian Meel are ancient forms of exercise.
Club and mace swinging are some of the oldest, continuously practiced forms of exercise in the world. While many ancient culture’s histories include some version of these practices, India and Persia boast traditional exercises, movements and skill development with these tools that have endured the millennia. Rotational strength through multiple planes of movement, whole-body balance, and intense neuromuscular stimulation are just some of the benefits of working with these tools.
There is an article on the blog called "Movement Across Cultures" that discusses some of this history - along with exercises from other cultures.
